The practical driving test lasts just under 40 minutes and will cover a wide variety of roads including dual carriageways (where available), town centre, rural roads and villages depending on location of the test centre.

You will be asked to complete 2 manoeuvres. These will selected out of the following:

  • Reverse around a corner
  • Parallel Parking
  • Reverse parking into a space at the beginning or end of the test
  • Turn-in-the-road.

You will be asked to "follow the road ahead, unless road signs or markings tell you otherwise". Most examiners will keep quiet. This is not to intimidate you, but to allow you to concentrate fully on the task.

Your driving test can only be booked after passing your theory test.   We can arrange this for you at a cost of £55.  Please ring us for details.

At the end of your test your examiner will tell you whether you have passed or failed. If you have failed you will be asked whether you wish to be told the reasons and if you would like your instructor to listen in on the feedback. This is very helpful even though you may not feel like listening to all your faults as it will help you and your instructor to identify the areas which need to be reviewed before your next test.

If you do pass your test you will subject to a TWO YEAR PROBATIONARY PERIOD. This means that you must not have more than 6 penalty points on your licence. If you get more than 6 points you will revert to provisional licence status and have to drive with L-Plates and re-take the theory and driving test again before you can drive unaccompanied.

Changes to the Driving Test in 2003

The Driving Standards Agency introduced a number of changes to the UK Driving Test towards the end of 2003.

At the start of each test Car and Motorcycle candidates will be asked to demonstrate how to carry out basic vehicle or machine checks. The areas will include:

  • Brakes
  • Lights
  • Fluids
  • Tyres
  • Reflectors

The examiner will ask you either to tell or show how to check one or some of these items.

The results of the candidates explanation or demonstration will be included on the new examiners marking sheet (DL25).

Example of Questions you might be asked at the start of your test

  • Would you identify where you would check the oil level and explain how to check that you have sufficient oil?
  • Show me how you would check that your headlights and taillights are working?
  • Show me how you would check that your direction indicators are working?
  • Explain what checks you would make on the tyres before starting a journey?
