The Theory Test for Car Drivers and Motorcyclists was introduced in July 1996. It is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified riders and drivers by making them think carefully about the right attitudes needed to drive safely on today's busy roads.

Areas of assessment include:
  • Driver attitude
  • Traffic signs and regulations
  • Effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on driver behaviour
  • Safety and environmental aspects of vehicles.

The theory test has changed slightly since November 2002. There are now two parts to the test.

Part One

The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions. To pass you need to answer at least 43 questions correctly. You are allowed 57 minutes to complete the test. The test is taken using a touch screen computer.

Part Two

The electronic test is taken in front of a normal computer monitor. You will watch a series of video clips, each about a minute long, filmed on all sorts of roads, from country lanes to suburban high streets to motorways.

Each clip will contain one or more developing hazards. Candidates need to click the mouse button as soon as they see a hazard. You will be asked to indicate as soon as you see a hazard developing which may result in the driver taking some action, such as changing speed or direction. The sooner a response is made the higher the score.

There will be 14 different moving scenes on the Hazard Perception test screen. One scene will have two hazards to identify. The 14 scenes will be taken from a bank of 200. You will have to identify the moving hazard by clicking a mouse. For example, a car pulling out in front of you. You will be given a 'window of time' in which to spot the hazard. The score will depend on how soon you identify the hazard - the longer you take, the lower your score. You will score a zero mark if you either click too late, or repeatedly.

This new part ( Introduced in November 2002) will be taken at the same time as the current theory test. This will take about an extra 20 minutes, you need to score 44 or more out of 75 to pass.

You need to pass both parts of the theory test.

Your Theory test result will be available to you immediately following your test.

You must take both parts of your theory test in one sitting before you can apply for a practical car test!!
